The index of public policies for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in Latin America and the Caribbean is a tool that the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) applies to measure support for these enterprises. This Monday the 27th, Uruguay was launched as the venue for the second edition of the indicator, which is prepared based on consultation with public and private actors.
Participating in the activity, carried out within the framework of the International Day of MSMEs, were the Undersecretary of Industry, Energy and Mining, Walter Verri; the head of the Division for Latin America and the Caribbean of the OECD, José Antonio Ardavín; the permanent secretary of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic System (SELA), Clarems Endara Vera, and the South General Manager of CAF-Development Bank of Latin America, Jorge Srur.
In his speech, Verri appreciated that Uruguay is the venue for this analysis and stated that 99% of the country’s companies are MSMEs and that they represent two thirds of the labor sources.
“The relevant and quality information that comes from this index is an input of great impact, because it will allow us to design more efficient tools,” he said in relation to the aforementioned instrument.
The chief added that the Government must continue to support these undertakings so that the effect is greater on the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). He also assured that a significant recovery in the sector is visible after the crisis generated by COVID-19.
Under the slogan “Towards an inclusive, resilient and sustainable recovery”, this edition will take into account the impact and circumstances caused by the health emergency and will emphasize the digitalization of companies. The survey will be carried out in Montevideo, between June 27 and 28, on a web platform designed by the OECD and SELA, through a form that will be prepared during these work days.
Delegations from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay will participate.
The indicator measures the institutional framework, the operational environment for the application and simplification of procedures, access to financing, development services for MSMEs and public procurement, innovation and technology, productive transformation, and access to the market and internationalization. of those companies.
