“As a spokesman for President Luis Abinader, I reiterate the official position: This government will not accept any agreement or regulation that makes us a recipient of Haitian citizens affected by the political instability in Haiti. The reason is simple: as a country with limited resources, the provision of public services to the irregular migrant population has a negative impact on social policies aimed at Dominican citizens,” said Figueroa.

Through a statement released by the National Palace, the spokesman and director of Strategy and Communication of the Presidency indicated that this project responds to a commitment assumed by the country as a signatory to various international conventions.

«But as a democratic society that we are, it is convenient that the submission of any bill be corrected by civilized debate and constructive criticism. Remember that we are a government that listens. We have never hesitated, whenever circumstances have required it, to make the most convenient decision in the national interest,” he assured.

Figueroa pointed out that it must be borne in mind that the absence of the rule of law in Haiti implies permanent political, social, economic and security risks for the Dominican Republic, so this is the moment to be united to defend the Homeland.

Likewise, he reiterated that the government of President Abinader will not accept any agreement or norm that makes the country a recipient of Haitian citizens affected by the political instability in Haiti.
