The Minister of the Civil House, Rui Costa, said on Wednesday (24) that the federal government will judicially trigger hotel establishments that are abusing the prices of the 30th Conference of the United Nations on Climate Change (COP30), which will be held in Belém (PA), in November.
“We are going to trigger legally, seeking to bring these prices to the level of reasonableness. It is not correct, it is not fair that hotels – including some who use public buildings and who have accessed subsidized resources – are charging stratospheric values. This does not correspond to what we want to fix as Belem’s image,” he said.
Costa stressed that the city is availability for renting international properties at compatible prices, and the goal is to deconstruct the narrative that there is no capacity to host the event.
“My coming here is to deconstruct this narrative, including internationally. It has been said in recent weeks, and there have been those who defend the withdrawal of the COP from Belém, due to a supposed shortage of beds,” said the minister.
The goal is to demonstrate that there are excellent quality properties at prices compatible with the international standard, available for rent.
Costa acknowledged, however, that some hotel enterprises are committing prices abuse. About establishments whose stay values are out of any pattern of reasonableness, ”the minister said he has already started meetings with the Union’s general law in search of solutions.
According to the federal government, more than R $ 4 billion were invested by the Union at COP30 so that Belém is the scene of the largest climate event ever held by the United Nations (UN), with renewed infrastructure, road requalification, environmental advances, urban improvements and permanent legacy for the city.
The infrastructure for the event is almost ready. Vila leaders, for example, has 90% of the works completed and, after COP30, will be used as the administrative headquarters of the state government. Belém International Airport has 95% finished execution. The revitalization of Futuro Porto 2 is 99% completed, as is the structure of the city park.
“If the image at the end of the COP is that in Bethlehem abusive prices are practiced, impossible to be paid by any ordinary person, the great legacy of COP will not be positive. And what is the great legacy? The image of a warm, warm people, with a wonderful cuisine. This is what we want to let the whole world be curious to know the Amazon and the city that hosted COP30,” he said.
