The government of Luis Lacalle Pou is analyzing the potential creation of a space agency to insert our country into the vertiginous space race led in the world by powers such as the United States, Russia, India, China and the European Union.
The Executive ordered the formation of a board of experts in aerospace and military commanders, to analyze the possibilities. This coincides with the arrival of the Argentine company TLON Space, which proposed the possibility of launching rockets from an area in the department of Rocha, in the east of the country. “It is the first time that a company has come to consult us on something like this,” Air Force General Luis De León, commander of the Uruguayan Air Force (FAU), told El País newspaper.
In this sense, the Aerospace Military School teaches the Aerospace Military Defense Degree, which since 2020 has graduated 32 soldiers. This career is recognized by the Ministry of Education and Culture and offers the possibility of also graduating as a “Bachelor in Aerospace Military Defense”, with the option “Aviator”, “Aeronautical Logistics”; or “Communications and Electronics”.
The company TLON Space says on its website that it has a vision to create “the most frequent and profitable small launch vehicle in the world to serve the small satellite industry.”
They claim to have designed the smallest engine in the industry, 100% ecological and powered by green propellants. With all this, they promise their customers the most competitive prices in the world.
The Emerald
According to the aforementioned newspaper, the launch area that the Argentine company is looking for would be located in the La Esmeralda resort of Roche, according to General De León.
It is the only point where rockets could be launched without invading the airspace of Argentina or Brazil, aiming at the South Pole and then gaining altitude.
