The Ministry of Planning and Budget (MPO) released on Wednesday (29) that temporarily suspended the initiative of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) of the creation of the IBGE (IBGE+) Scientific and Technological Innovation Support Foundation. According to MPO, the Foundation would have the purpose of promoting institutional development and expanding sources of financial resources to IBGE.
“Given this challenge, alternative models are being mapped that can give rise to legislative changes, which will require a frank and open dialogue with the National Congress,” says the note published by MPO.
The text also states that the two bodies clarified that any decision that will be made will be debated inpatient and in the Executive and Legislative Powers.
The Ministry of Planning and Budget also reported that it will support IBGE, through the Annual Budget Law (LOA), to formulate the agricultural, forest and aquaculture census, one of the Institute’s most relevant research, in resources for 2025 ( schedule involving training, hiring, among others).
Workers
The IBGE National Union of Workers (Assibge) assesses that the temporary suspension of the creation of the IBGE+ Foundation is a victory for the mobilization of workers from the Institute and Civil Society.
“At the moment, IBGE’s management must clarify what it actually means with ‘temporary suspension’, and make sure that the servers will have voice in the debate of the institutional arrangement that the direction claims that it will seek with the executive and legislature. ASSIBGE will maintain its opposition to any proposal that maintains the institutional risks that permeate “IBGE+”.
According to the union, a meeting with the presidency of IBGE is scheduled for February 4 to collect further clarification on the subject. “The announcement of the Foundation’s temporary suspension is an important but insufficient step in itself to end the crisis faced by the institute, marked by authoritarian management decisions in other fields, including serious antisindical measures over the past few months.” , says the entity.
This morning, Assibge held an act in front of the Institute’s headquarters in Rio de Janeiro to protest against acts of IBGE President Márcio Pochmann, in particular, the creation of the Private Law Foundation.
