The federal government is advancing in the study of new rules for the online betting market. In an interview with TV Brasilthe Secretary of Prizes and Bets, Régis Dudena, said that the regulation of the operation of bets will require operators to register the players’ CPF. The objective of the measure is to make it possible to monitor the history of retirees to ensure their mental and financial health.
Dudena also confirmed that next Friday (11) around 2,000 irregular websites should be taken offline, in a joint action by the Ministry of Finance and the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel). According to the secretary, these are sites involved in fraud and scams.
In an interview with Agência BrasilDudena had already highlighted the importance of accelerating regulation of the sector. A rule voted in the National Congress and sanctioned by President Lula in December 2023 established that it is up to the Ministry of Finance to authorize the exploration of betting and set conditions and deadlines for the adaptation of companies in the sector.
This Wednesday, football federations received guidance from the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) to remove advertisements for irregular bets from t-shirts and other sporting materials.
Public health
Last week, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva once again warned the population about the danger of gaming addiction. At a ministerial meeting, he discussed measures to reduce the impacts of sports betting and online games, known as bets, in cases of dependence and debt.
“There are a lot of people getting into debt, there are a lot of people spending what they don’t have. And we think this has to be treated as a dependency issue. In other words, people are dependent, people are addicted”, highlighted Lula, according to a note released by the Presidency after the meeting.
Another concern of the federal government is with users of Bolsa Família. Studies point to the use of the benefit for betting. Measures to restrict Bolsa Família for this purpose are also under analysis.
The Ministry of Finance’s Prizes and Betting Secretariat released updated versions of the lists of fixed-odd betting companies, bets (brands) and respective websites that can continue to operate until the end of this year at a national and state level. In the national list, there are 93 companies with 205 bets respectively. The state lists have 18 companies.
