In a surprising turn, Jorge Rojas presented his irrevocable resignation as director of the Administrative Department of the Presidency (Dapre) after the tense Council of Ministers held on Tuesday.
His resignation, which occurred just eight days after assuming the position, reflects the internal fractures within the government of President Gustavo Petro.
During the session, Rojas expressed serious criticism of the recent designation of Armando Benedetti as head of Cabinet.
“The concept of strengthening of the government and the rule of law has become blurred for several years, not only in this administration. I consider that the DAPRE must faithfully reflect government management. In my opinion, the figure of Chief of Cabinet or Head of Office distorts the dynamics between the president and his ministers”Said Rojas.
In addition, he stressed his concern about the proliferation of bureaucracy within the public administration and the efficiency of the presidential councils.
After his resignation, he told W Radio: “I can’t be in the DaPre. I thank the president, but the events do not allow me to continue by his side”
The call to a collective renunciation of the cabinet
Hours after the Council of Ministers, the Minister of the Interior, Juan Fernando Cristo, proposed the mass resignation of all ministers to give the President Freedom to restructure his work team.
In an extensive message posted on social networks, Christ described as “unsustainable ”the current composition of the cabinet«.
“This Council of Ministers was not the scene to repeat the management report of the start of the year, nor was it a convenient decision to transmit it on television. After yesterday’s episode, the cabinet is unsustainable as it is formedAnd, ”said the minister.
He also questioned the decision to make public the advice of ministers, arguing that certain discussions require confidentiality due to their impact on national security and government stability.
A government at the crossroads
The internal crisis of the Petro government intensifies at a crucial moment for the implementation of its program. A year and a half of finishing its mandate, the instability of the cabinet puts at risk the fulfillment of its political agenda and reinforces the perception of disorder in the administration.
Rojas’s resignation could only be the first movement in a broader restructuring. The next hours will be decisive to define the future of the cabinet and the governance of Petro.
