The federal government will transfer more than R$ 1.7 million to the city of Petrópolis, in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro, for civil defense actions. It was hit on February 15 by a strong storm, causing the death of more than 230 people.
The ordinance of the Ministry of Regional Development (MDR) releasing the funds is published in Official Diary of the Union this Thursday (3). “Considering the nature and volume of actions to be implemented, the execution period will be 180 days”, as of today, says the ordinance.
As a result of the storm, until this Wednesday (2), soldiers from the Fire Department were still working in the localities of Morro da Oficina, Chácara Flora and along the Quitandinha River, in the work of looking for the missing.
So far, 1,117 people are in shelters. Assistance to the affected population is distributed at city hall support points, such as public schools, currently with 955 people, and places voluntarily structured by the communities, in churches, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other entities.
