The Government of President Gabriel Boric presented Colonel Sebastián Urra as the new director of the Gendarmerie. The head of Justice, Marcela Ríos, referred to the appointment of the recently appointed boss, stating that “we are extremely happy to be able to take a step to renew the institution.”
“Our mandate as a Government and as a Ministry is to put a particular focus on the well-being and working conditions of gendarmerie personnel,” said Minister Ríos.
And he added that they also seek to ensure that the appropriate conditions are in place so that they can function, but “we also have a mandate to ensure the defense of the rights of all persons deprived of liberty; Human Rights with international standards in this area, promote a genuine social reintegration and also bring a gender focus to the work we are doing”.
Colonel Sebastián Urra thanked the appointment and the confidence given by La Moneda and reported that the work itself that will be developed “will be the continuity of the strict adherence to Human Rights, the gender approach that will be highlighted in this administration, as well as the quality of life of the institution’s staff so that they are all considered without exclusion”.
The new director of the Gendarmerie also pointed out that there will be “an adherence to the regulations in the search to eliminate corruption within the institution”, as well as to try to give space to the LGTBI populations within the institution, and will do everything possible so that the women have a broad participation within “fields markedly for men today”.
