Border surveillance increases
In the last year of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s government, surveillance at the borders was increased.
As part of the “Plan for Migration and Development on the Northern and Southern Borders,” 15,193 members of the Armed Forces were deployed, representing a slight increase of 3%.
7,234 elements of the National Defense Secretariat were deployed on the southern border and 7,959 on the northern border.
Refuge and visas
The Government delivered 197,558 immigration cards to migrants so they could prove their legal stay in Mexico.
According to the Sixth Government Report, 197,558 migrants were given cards, of which 101,475 (51.4%) are for temporary residents; 69,456 (35.2%) for permanent residents; 17,772 (9%) for visitors for humanitarian reasons; 8,840 (4.5%) for temporary student residents; and 15 for visitors for adoption purposes.
Regarding asylum requests, between September 1, 2023, and June 30, the Government of Mexico received 47,937 refugee equivalent applications for 80,501 people. Of these, 24,335 applications were resolved, but only 9,137 cases were resolved positively for the benefit of 17,441 migrants.
