Government of Santa Cruz fears wave of violence and asks not to be permissive with armed groups

The Secretary of Citizen Security of the Government of Santa Cruz, Rubén Suárez, describes as “alarming and worrying” the situation experienced yesterday Tuesday in El Cuchi (Porongo) where three uniformed men were murdered. With a past as a police commander, Suárez awaits a “clear, truthful and exact” investigation to clarify the deaths.

Beyond lamenting the death of the two police officers and the Gacip volunteer, the Secretary of Security fear of a wave of violence in the department. This was stated in the program ‘Influyentes’ that is broadcast by EL DEBER Radio.

Suárez calls on the various levels of government and the institutions in charge of security. “The Institutions we have to unite and speak the same language, something that is not happening”, he laments.

And he slips a direct criticism against the current departmental police commander in Santa Cruz, Erick Holguín. “The commander is in another,” he says.. “He blames the Government for the insecurity”, for the administrative delay for the payment of fuel, he explains.

As responsible for citizen security, he reiterates the offer made by the Government to the Commander. “We have at our disposal a batch of vehicles with driver and fuel” that will facilitate patrolling throughout the department. Apparently, according to Suárez himself, the Police did not respond to this proposal.

The secretary does not put all the blame on the police. “It does not have the human or material resources to provide security for the entire department. It’s big,” he says.

He supports his assertions by detailing some specific aspects that surround the murder of the three uniformed. The two deceased policemen lacked protection as bulletproof vests while the assailants wielded high-powered weapons.

Suárez is pessimistic about the growing crime wave in the department and fears a return to the situation experienced in 2017 when organized groups robbed a Brink’s truck and tried to rob a city jewelry store.

“We don’t want Santa Cruz to go into distress,” he says. For this, he requires greater rigor of the authorities thanuntil now, “They have been permissive with the presence of armed groups.
