Government of Rio presents proposals for changes to criminal legislation

The governor of Rio, Cláudio Castro (photo), presented, this Tuesday (12), to the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, proposals for changes in criminal legislation, which will help strengthen the fight against organized crime in Rio de Janeiro and across the country. The suggestions are part of a bill, to be delivered this year by the Senate Public Security Committee.Government of Rio presents proposals for changes to criminal legislation

The project will focus on the custody hearing so that the rules for recidivism can be changed. The idea is to create a criminal concept of habituality, ending the granting of provisional release to prisoners who have been arrested more than once within a two-year period. The text will also deal with the criteria for sentence progression.

“We used a theme during the meeting that I really liked: a major correction in criminal legislation. It will not give rise to or take place in the discussion of the new Penal Code and the new Code of Criminal Procedure. With the proposals we are bringing today, we can have a reform that corrects situations that harm public safety on a daily basis”, said Castro.

Carrying a rifle

The project will also address the issue of carrying a rifle, so that it can be an aggravating factor in the defendant’s sentence. “It is no longer possible for legislation to be so benevolent. Anyone caught committing crimes of trafficking, extortion, robbery and robbery using a rifle does not have their sentence increased for a single day. The rifle has become a great plague in Rio de Janeiro”, said senator Flávio Bolsonaro who participated in the meeting, adding that, in the form in which it will be presented, the project should be processed more quickly.

Castro also said that these weapons of war enter freely across borders today. He demanded greater control by federal security forces.
