The massive protests that are shaking Peru seeking the resignation of the president, Dina Boluarte, in which 46 people have died, will continue, Interior Minister Vicente Romero warned on the eve of a “national march” in Lima.
“Social protests They are still going to continue, we are working intensively with the Minister of Defense on how to solve them”, declared the head of the Interior to the state television station TV Peru.
The authority defended the police repression, questioned by civil society groups, highlighting the professionalism and respect for human rights of law enforcement.
“Right now, we are experiencing one of the highest levels of violence in recent times, after the 1980s, however, I believe that the capabilities that our Police are showing have been spectacular,” added Romero.
“We have trained more than 5,000 men, especially in human rights,” he said.
“Now, civil war!”
“Now, civil war!” exclaimed hundreds of protesters who marched in Lima yesterday.
“We are not one, now we are two, Now we are all, with one voice!” exclaimed Andean protesters from Puno, Cusco and Andahuaylas during an afternoon mobilization under a scorching sun in the Peruvian capital.
The march passed peacefully for several blocks between Plaza Dos de Mayo and Plaza Bolognesi, before being dispersed by the riot police using tear gas.
While the General Confederation of Workers of Peru (CGTP) called a national march this Tuesday under the slogan of “cessation of criminal repression” and the request for the closure of Congress and a Constituent Assembly.
“We are calling for a peaceful national mobilization for tomorrow,” said the general secretary of the CGTP, Gerónimo López, at a press conference.
“The national people have been developing peaceful, civic democratic struggles. We reject any act of violence and any act that goes against a public or private entity. Those who are generating chaos and destruction are people infiltrated by the Government, ”he said.
The Minister of the Interior has indicated that “There are just claims that the Government has to attend to”, but denounces the presence of vandals among the protesters.
