The government of Peru ordered the definitive retirement of the ambassador in Colombia, Félix Denegri Boza. The decision of the administration of President Dina Boluarte was assumed due to the “repeated interfering and offensive expressions” of President Gustavo Petro.

In a statement quoted by Trade, It is pointed out that the President of Colombia “persists in distorting reality” by not knowing that former President Pedro Castillo carried out a coup on December 7, 2022.

For the Government of Peru, with Petro’s attitude “the historic relationship of friendship, cooperation and mutual respect that has existed between Peru and Colombia has seriously deteriorated.”

During the XXVIII Ibero-American Summit, President Petro asserted that Castillo should be participating in that event instead of being imprisoned. In this sense, the Foreign Minister of Peru, Ana Cecilia Gervasi, responded: “If Pedro Castillo is not here, it is because he carried out a coup. If he were, they would have a dictator ”.

The ambassador’s retirement determines that diplomatic relations between Peru and Colombia are formally at the level of charge d’affaires. The relationships consular services between the two countries will continue as normal, “but the dynamics of the bilateral relationship will be hindered.”

After the measure, the intensity of the relationship decreases substantially in the political aspect as the ambassador has been definitively withdrawn.
