Government of Mexico includes Abdala in the vaccination campaign, despite its low acceptance

SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- The Government of Mexico included the Cuban vaccine against COVID-19 Abdala in the national winter vaccination campaign that began this Tuesday, despite the low acceptance that the injectable has had among the Mexican population.

According to the official media Granma, Kershenobich, in an event held at the National Institute of Geriatrics, explained that although the strains of the coronavirus have been changing, the scientific community and the World Health Organization (WHO) recommend the use of biologicals, including those of the first generation developed during the pandemic, which began in 2020.

In total, they plan to apply more than 36 million doses against influenza and approximately 22 million against COVID-19.

There are already several shipments of Cuban vaccines that the Mexican government purchases from its allies on the Island.

The former president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, known for his support of the Cuban regime, He has defended Abdala’s effectiveness when many criticize him for his election.

I reject Abdala

Abdala, unlike the other 11 vaccines authorized by the World Health Organization, was only tested in Cuba and has also been authorized for use in Mexico, Nicaragua, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Venezuela and Vietnam.

The biological was developed by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology. According to Cuban information, the vaccine showed an efficacy of 92.28 percent in trials with a three-dose schedule.

At the beginning of the application of the Cuban vaccine candidate in Mexico, various media outlets documented that very few people had wanted to apply it because, although it had been approved by the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (COFEPRIS), there was still no achieved WHO endorsement.

In February of this year, the Government of Mexico received 4,530,600 doses of the Cuban vaccine against COVID-19to reinforce its National Winter Vaccination Campaign.

According to a note from the Ministry of Health of that countrywith the doses that arrived, and since the first shipment of the year that arrived in the country on January 26, Mexico received 7,381,800 doses of packaged Abdala vaccines at the beginning of 2024.
