Government of Colombia and the ELN will meet again in January to discuss the "ceasefire"

The ELN and the Government of Colombia have celebrated two years of sitting at the negotiating table. The delegation of authorities welcomes that 27 agreements have been reached with that insurgent group, something that it stated had never happened before.

The delegation of the Government of Colombia, which is holding a dialogue with the National Liberation Army (ELN), announced this Monday, November 25, that it seeks to define together with the insurgent group that there is a “continuity of the ceasefire” in a meeting to be held in January 2025, although with no place yet to be defined, in what he described as “a new stage” in the peace negotiations.

These delegations, which held meetings in Caracas from November 19 to date, reached consensus on a “first meeting” of what would be another chapter on the path to peace in Colombia to evaluate whether or not the objectives have been met. agreements they reached and “introduce correctives.”

In that sense, they plan to “adopt mechanisms” to “prevent the repetition” of non-compliance or “continuing actions that weaken” the dialogue.

The bilateral ceasefire ended in August without an agreement being reached to extend it.

Via statement, distributed by the social networkthe delegation of the Government of Colombia recalled that they have already spent two years of “intense work” with the ELN to reach real solutions, recalling that what was agreed in Mexico and 27 other agreements evidence “an accumulation never before achieved in the history of “peace talks” with the guerrilla group.

“They have been achievements in the midst of great difficulties, among which is the painful circumstance that, despite having achieved a year-long ceasefire, the armed conflict continues to claim the lives of young soldiers, members of the guerrilla, and subdue to populations in the territories for the purposes of violent confrontation, which adds to situations of immense precariousness in their subsistence conditions,” he said.

«Our will is to persist in building the most complete and developed agreement possible that allows the path of transition to peace with the ELN. To this end, we summon the will of all the social, economic and political forces of the country, which we invite to participate decisively in the construction of this process,” said the delegation,

The delegations of the Government of Colombia and the ELN agreed to meet from November 19 to 25 so that the date would coincide with the two years since the peace process began.

Prior to this, the guerrilla published a series of principles around what would be a new round of negotiations; in which he asked to apply a “new negotiation model”, in which what is being agreed upon is implemented immediately and that this is accompanied by a verification of compliance with the measures, just as he requests that there be a clause for when there are non-compliances.
