The government chose the lawyer Lydia Casas calf as a candidate for the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) for the period 2024-2027.
Casas is “a lawyer from the Diego Portales University and a doctorate in law from the University of Ottawa, Canada, with a professional career of more than twenty years of teaching linked to international human rights law,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
From the Executive they highlighted that Casas has multiple academic publications dedicated to the investigation of violence against women; access to justice and gender; and discrimination.
“Likewise, she has served as co-director of the Master’s Degree in International Human Rights Law at the Diego Portales University and director of the Human Rights Center of the same university,” they added.
The IACHR is an autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS) in charge of the promotion and protection of human rights in the Americas. It is made up of seven independent members who serve personally and is headquartered in Washington, DC.
“unprecedented process”
The Government pointed out that, to adopt the decision, they carried out an “unprecedented process” that made possible a detailed evaluation of the requirements established both in the American Convention on Human Rights and in the Statute of the IACHR.
“This process gathered comparative experiences and some recommendations from organizations linked to the promotion and protection of human rights on the continent,” said the Foreign Ministry.
“The Government considered different professional profiles of people linked to the promotion and protection of human rights, under the premise that all of them met the requirements to integrate the IACHR, and invited the National Institute of Human Rights and the Ombudsman for Children , autonomous human rights institutions in the country, to participate in this analysis as observers,” they added.
“In addition, in the active search for profiles, the gender balance and the regional representation of the profiles were taken into account,” they indicated.
The Government raised the background to the chancellor Antonia Urrejolawho, in agreement with the President gabriel boricdetermined the designation of Houses.
