The Minister of Government, Janaina Tewaney Mencomo, presented this Friday the current situation of the prison system in the country, revealing that since 2018 there has been an exponential increase in the prison population, more than 25%.
He indicated that, to date, there are around 19,561 prisoners in prisons in the country.
“When I was assigned there were 17 thousand. The figures are increasing and this requires immediate intervention. The penitentiary system cannot only be seen from the perspective of the Ministry of Government”, he pointed out.
As for the resocialized, he explained that last year there were 6,300, however, from that group of prisoners all do not apply for resocialization, since there are certain requirements, the initial one is that it must be voluntary.
Tewaney mentioned that during his administration he identified that prisons have a lot of income that can be used for self-management, but that they are not being used for what should be resocialization.
He stated that there was a negotiation of approximately one year with the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), and finally the creation of this national resocialization fund was approved.
