Government is verifying the possible death of 'Iván Márquez' in Venezuela

During the afternoon of this Tuesday, October 22, rumors arose of a possible death of Luciano Marín Arango, alias ‘Iván Márquez’, a FARC dissident and head of the so-called ‘Second Marquetalia’ in Venezuela. In this regard, The government of President Gustavo Petro indicated that it is verifying the versions.

“It has not been confirmed. We have investigated in various ways, but so far we have no confirmation. Nor denial. The only information is that he could have died as a result of surgery. But that’s it, that’s it,” reported the Commissioner for Peace, Otty Patiño. Patiño responded in this way to questions from Blu Radio journalistsin Cali, in the middle of an event related to COP16.

Patiño added that if the death of ‘Iván Márquez’ is confirmed, this would not imply a brake on the peace process with the Second Marquetalia. “I hope it is not true, if it is true we have to continue committed to peace with the Second Marquetalia (…) We are going to continue it with the people they designate.”
