Government has abandoned public hospitals, says Ramón Alvarado

Santo Domingo.- The head of the Ministry of Health of the People’s Force, Ramón Alvarado, said today that “the situation of public hospitals has become a great disaster in the current government administration.

The false promises and the lack of medicines in health care centers do not correspond to the health model promised by the current President of the Republic, as a benchmark for Latin America and the Caribbean.

The medical professional explained, at a press conference, that the government of President Luis Abinader has abandoned hospitals, for which he urged the authorities in the matter to come to the aid of public sector centers to guarantee the supply of supplies, medicines and, appoint the specialized personnel that is required.

The doctor who is a member of the Central Directorate of the VETassured that, “the drama of the hospitals sensibly affects the poorest population in the country: those of the subsidized regime, the unaffiliated and those who do not have the ability to pay, whose only option is public health services.”

“The abandonment of first-level care services by the health authorities is one of the main causes of the chaotic situation that the different public hospitals are going through, affecting the budget of families and generating higher levels of poverty”, stressed Ramón Alvarado.

Specific situation in the main health centers

In that same order, the medical professional pointed out that: “the hospital crisis affects the entire country”, he cited the situation of some hospital establishments and their main problems.

The Dr. Francisco Moscoso Puello hospital, a national reference center, lacks supplies, medicines and basic emergency equipment, such as: serums, drains, catheters, syringes, gloves, X-rays, sphygmomanometers and even prescriptions. On top of all this, dozens of servers have been terminated, including nurses.

Taiwan Regional Hospital of (Azua). This property is affected by leaks, damaged air system, and deteriorating bedding. In the Intensive Care Unit there is a lack of specialized personnel. The Blood Bank is closed.

Regional Pediatric Hospital Dr. Arturo Grullón. Despite being the only pediatric hospital in the Cibao region, it has a significant deficit of beds in general, in the Neonatology and Intensive Care units, and only 4 of the 9 operating rooms are working. It also lacks medicines and supplies.

Antonio Musa Regional Hospital (San Pedro de Macorís). In this center, five operating rooms remain closed, the elevator damaged, lack of medicines, supplies and equipment (ventilators, tomograph) and lack of specialized medical, nursing and administrative personnel. The hospital is not cleaned due to lack of staff.

Regional Hospital San Vicente de Paul (Duarte). This establishment lacks medicines and supplies such as: gloves, alcohol, gauzes, syringes, serums, drains, catheter, oxygen, among others.

In addition, lack of equipment: echocardiograph, electrocardiograph, laryngoscope, nebulizers, surgical tray, vacuum cleaners, among others. Deficit of specialized, technical and cleaning human resources. Internal medicine resident doctors do not have a room to receive teaching, they do not have a room to rest, they do not have a library.

The data provided by the secretary and deputy secretaries of health of the People’s Force describes a critical situation, which reflects the lack of sensitivity and inability of the government to manage the health of the Dominican people.
