Colombia and Venezuela formalized the transport of cargo through the Atanasio Girardot binational bridge, formerly known as Tienditas, with which the process of reopening trade by land with the neighboring country was completed.
The act was carried out with the passage of three Colombian cargo trucks that crossed the international bridge around 3 in the afternoon on Wednesday. In these vehicles, 96 tons of food preparations such as soft drinks, food and snacks were transported.
The international bridge, which connects the towns of Villa del Rosario in Norte de Santander and Pedro María Ureña, in the state of Táchira, was inaugurated on January 1 with the presence of the Ministers of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Germán Umaña Mendoza and of Transport, Guillermo Reyes González.
Freddy Bernal, current governor of the state of Táchira, and senior officials from the neighboring country also participated in this inauguration.
However, regarding the transit of people, since this infrastructure was put into operation and until January 9, 42,917 vehicles, 10,066 motorcycles and 140,947 people had entered the country through this point. Meanwhile, the departure to the neighboring country accounts for 41,350 vehicles, 9,343 motorcycles and 135,195 people, according to data from Colombia Migration.
The Minister of Commerce, Germán Umaña Mendoza, highlighted this milestone by noting that “the start of cargo operations through the Atanasio Girardot bridge allows us to consolidate the integration of Colombia and Venezuela by facilitating the passage of private vehicles and passenger transport. Now, with the passage of merchandise, new opportunities are opening up for the commercial complementation of our countries”.
For the Minister of Transportation, Guillermo Francisco Reyes González “it is satisfying to see that this regional infrastructure works well and supports the full restoration of political, social, diplomatic and commercial relations.”
