After last December the Senate approved the Inter-American Convention on the Protection of the Human Rights of Older Persons, adopted in Washington since 2015, the federal government published yesterday the official decree approving said instrument.
The convention establishes that the signatory countries must replace the welfare vision with one in which the elderly are considered as a subject with rights; It is a premise compatible with Mexican laws and the vision of the federal government, it was exposed during its endorsement in the Congress of the Union at the end of last year.
Although the decree does not define the actions that the Mexican State will adopt with the approval of the instrument, during its discussion in the legislative body, Héctor Vasconcelos, president of the Foreign Relations Commission, argued that it is aimed at promote, protect and ensure the recognition and full enjoyment of the human rights and fundamental freedoms of this social sector

The convention signed in 2015 defines that countries must adopt legislative, administrative and other measures to prevent, investigate, punish and eradicate acts of violence against older persons.
It also indicates that older adults have the right to a comprehensive care system that provides protection and promotion of health, coverage of social services, food and nutritional security, as well as access to housing, promoting that they can decide to remain in their home and maintain their independence and autonomy, among other points.
