The Ministry of Justice and Public Security has extended the operations of the National Public Security Force in the state of Rio de Janeiro for another 90 days. The decision was published this Friday (13), in Official Gazette of the Union.
According to the text of Ordinance No. 766signed by Minister Ricardo Lewandowski, agents of the federal troops will continue to support federal and state public security bodies in preserving public order and the integrity of people and property.
The Rio de Janeiro state government will be responsible for providing the necessary infrastructure for the National Force to operate during the period of operation. The contingent of agents to be sent will be defined by the National Force’s board of directors.
In a note, the ministry clarified that the request to renew the presence of the National Force was presented by the state government on the 2nd, the deadline.
“It is worth noting that the use of the National Force in any part of the territory is strictly subject to the express request of state governors, the Federal District or ministers of State,” the ministry added, highlighting that the personnel already mobilized remained in Rio de Janeiro, even though the previous authorization had expired almost two weeks ago.
The National Public Security Force comes acting in actions to combat organized crime in the state of Rio de Janeiro since the beginning of October 2023.
Composed of military and civil police officers, including firefighters and experts, temporarily assigned by states and the Federal District, in addition to federal agents, the federal troops are subordinate to the National Secretariat of Public Security, of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security.
The troops can be deployed anywhere in the national territory, at the request of governors or ministries that need support to carry out their actions.
