Government extended and increased Imesi exemption for gasoline in border cities

A new decree of the Executive Power established a reduction in the tribute of 30%; currently it is 24%.

The President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, signed a new decree on April 11 to reduce the amount of the Specific Internal Tax (Imesi) on fuels in border cities.

The decree, which was shared via social networks by the mayor of Paysandú, Nicolás Olivera, and by the president of the Salto Grande Mixed Technical Commission, Carlos Albisu, extends the Imesi reduction up to 30% as of May 1.

Currently, the Imesi exemption for service stations in border cities with Argentina and Brazil is 24% of the sale price of gasoline.

In January of this year, the Executive Branch set the Imesi for fuels at $30.04 per liter for Super 95 gasoline and at $31.82 per liter for Premium gasoline.

The discount for these two fuels at the border, therefore, will be between $9 and $10 per liter and only applicable when payment is made through credit or debit cards.

According to the latest report published by the Seg Engineering consultancy, Uruguay presented the highest fuel prices in the Southern Cone in March, while Argentina the cheapest gasoline and Paraguay diesel at the lowest price.
