Government delivers new aqueduct in Villa Altagracia that guarantees drinking water to more than 73 thousand people

Saint Dominic. The president Luis Abinader and Wellington Arnaudexecutive director of National Institute of Drinking Water and Sewers (INAPA), inaugurated the new Villa Altagracia aqueducta work that will benefit more than 73,000 inhabitants of this district in the San Cristóbal province.

The infrastructure strengthens the drinking water system in the area, increasing production capacity from 200 to 300 liters per second, thus guaranteeing a continuous, safe and sustainable supply.

The director of INAPA explained that a modern intake work was built on the Haina Riverlocated at kilometer 45 of the Duarte highway, which ensures a more reliable water source in the long term.

Arnaud recalled that when the original aqueduct was built in 1994, the source contemplated was the Isabela Riverwhose flow was insufficient to sustain the service over time.

“People began to call it the ‘rain aqueduct’, because it only worked when it rained. With our Hydrology team we determined that the safest and most sustainable source is the Haina River,” he said.

The project includes: New intake work, treatment plant, pumping station, regulatory tank with a capacity of one million gallons, and drive and distribution lines.

With an investment greater than RD$604,236,000this work guarantees drinking water with adequate quality, quantity and pressure for the coming decades.

Historic investment in Villa Altagracia

Wellington Arnaud highlighted that between 2004 and 2020 only RD$88 million were invested in the municipality’s drinking water system, while in the last five years the investment exceeds RD$600 million.

The official stated that the Government of President Luis Abinader has prioritized access to drinking water as part of a comprehensive vision to improve the quality of life and promote human development in the Dominican Republic.

The inauguration of the Villa Altagracia aqueduct is part of the national works delivery program carried out by INAPA throughout the year, focused on strengthening the drinking water and sanitation system in different communities in the country.

With this work, the Government continues to move towards a sustainable, modern drinking water system focused on the health and well-being of thousands of Dominican families.
