Government decrees state of catastrophe in Castro after mega fire that affected the area

In the voice of the Minister of the Interior, Rodrigo Delgado, the Government headed by President Piñera decreed a state of catastrophe in the commune of Castro, after the mega fire that burned 140 houses and has left nearly 500 victims on the island of Chiloé.

“Unfortunately this situation, of course, has generated various externalities, many of them very negative for hundreds of people, families and in that we are going to put the accent, first the human factor and also of course the help towards the victims,” said the Minister Delgado.

He also added that “we are going to articulate everything that is necessary, the first thing is to apply all the social cards, the teams are working on that. The Undersecretariat for Regional Development has also been developing a strategy since yesterday and we will see a finished diagnosis and we have to define the strategy by virtue of that diagnosis ”.

The Interior Minister also indicated that in the short term the presence of President Piñera in the area is not considered. However, the ministers Felipe Ward (Housing), María Emilia Undurraga (Agriculture), Javier Naranjo (Environment) and the aforementioned Rodrigo Delgado, are already on the island.

For his part, the Secretary of State, Felipe Ward, commented that “we are going to coordinate aid, the idea is to be able to talk with neighbors and with regional authorities. When decisions are made in the region on the scene, obviously the chances of being wrong are much lower ”.
