Government decreed a state of emergency in Lima, Callao, Puno, Cusco, Apurímac, Madre de Dios and Moquegua

Through Supreme Decree No. 009-2023-PCM, the Government established the from January 15, for 30 days, in seven regions of the country. Document was published tonight in the Official Gazette El Peruano. Measure includes five highways and entrusts internal order to the PNP. At the moment, only Puno will have a curfew.

“Declare as of January 15, 2023, for a term of thirty (30) calendar days, the state of emergency in the departments of Puno, Cusco, Lima, in the Constitutional Province of Callao, in the province of Andahuaylas of the department of Apurímac, in the provinces of Tambopata and Tahuamanu of the department of Madre de Dios, and in the district of Torata, province of Mariscal Nieto of the department of Moquegua. The National Police of Peru maintains control of internal order, with the support of the Armed Forces,” the decree states.

Likewise, the state of emergency governs five highways in the National Road Network: the South Pan-American Highway, the North Pan-American Highway, the Central Highway, the South Apurimac-Cusco-Arequipa Road Corridor and the South Interoceanic Highway Corridor.

Another measure of the supreme decree is the mandatory social immobilization in the Puno region, which comes into force for a term of 10 calendar days and determines that all people remain in their homes from 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.

This decision of the Government is given as a result of two official letters presented by the General Command of the National Police of Peru, where it is recommended to declare the aforementioned territories in a state of emergency. This is detailed in the norm that was released this Saturday.
