The government declared a health emergency throughout the country due to bird flu (Avian Influenza H5) after detect the first case of a black-necked swan in the Laguna Garzón, in Maldonado.
“Avian Influenza is an exotic viral disease that is registered for the first time within the national territory. It is having a wide dispersion among birds from different continents. It is transmitted by direct contagion, verifying in South America the transmission through migratory birds that they fly from contaminated areas in the north. There is no cure for Avian Influenza, which could cause significant damage to poultry production,” said the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP) in a statement.
In addition to decreeing the health emergency, the MGAP decided to suspend all fairs, auctions, exhibitions and events related to birds. As explained by a poultry producer to The ObserverIt is common in some livestock fairs that birds are put up for consideration prior to the sale of cattle, due to the new government decree this should be suspended.
The portfolio clarified that “the consumption of poultry meat or eggs does not affect human health.” But that “contact with birds sick with influenza can affect humans, so the population is urged to notify the presence of dead birds or with nervous, digestive or respiratory symptoms.”
