Government coordinates actions to address women’s mental health

Within the framework of the international discussion Mental Health in Women and the Use of Psychotropic Drugs, held this Wednesday 8, the head of the National Drug Secretariat, Daniel Radío, said that the institution is a pioneer in focusing, from different points of view, on the perspective of gender and inclusion, in the design and implementation of policies. In addition, he stressed that the Government works in a coordinated manner on this issue.

Also participating in the activity were the Undersecretary of Public Health (MSP), José Luis Satdjian; the director of the National Institute for Women (Inmujeres), Mónica Bottero; the deputy director of Health of the MSP, María Giudici, and the director of Mental Health of the State Health Services Administration (ASSE), Pablo Fielitz, among other authorities and specialists from state institutions and the Uruguayan Drug Observatory.

Radio expressed that the purposes of the National Drug Board (JND) are to continue with the tasks of raising awareness among the population about the rights of health users and promoting instances of dialogue with civil society and public and private institutions that execute programs on consumption. psychoactive substance problem.

In this sense, he highlighted the planning with InMujeres of training actions for the technical and non-technical personnel of both organizations and maintained that Copolad 3, a line of cooperation between the European Union and Latin America aimed at improving coherence, the balance and impact of drug policies.

For his part, Bottero revealed that the coordination with the JND and the MSP allowed activities to be carried out in various parts of the country, within the framework of the International Day of Action for Women’s Health. She added that there is a relationship between the consumption of psychotropic drugs and gender status. “Women need a different or own perspective to address and think about health issues,” she asserted.

Giudici, meanwhile, detailed the actions that the MSP has been implementing since 2020, reformulating benefits in addressing the impact of the health emergency on women’s quality of life.

She added that the guidelines of the portfolio on gender also contemplate the health of children, value social vulnerability for mothers under 17 years of age, consumers of psychoactive substances and with psychiatric pathologies.

In addition, the health of pregnant women is addressed with the aim of providing information and tools. Another strategy is to work on the issue of gender-based violence, since these components have an impact on the mental health of women.
