Government cancels six other international organizations in Nicaragua

NGOs nicaragua

The regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, through the Ministry of the Interior (Migob), ordered the cancellation of the registration of six NGOs from Italy, Costa Rica, Germany, the United States and Spain, alleging that their actions hindered “the control and surveillance”, by not reporting their financial statements, the identity and origin of their donors or registering as “foreign agents”.

The canceled organizations are: Terre Des Hommes Italia-Onlus Foundation, from Italy; Let’s Live Better Association, from Costa Rica; EV International Physician, from Germany; Planting Hope INC (Sowing Hope), from the United States; Gettysburg-León Project, from the United States and the Foundation for International Cooperation Works, from Spain.

The Migob General Directorate for Registration and Control of Non-Profit Organizations decided to cancel their registration and perpetual number assigned to the six organizations for “having failed to comply with their obligations under Nicaraguan law.”

“The six organizations of other nationalities, within 72 hours, must deliver to this Directorate all the documents related to the liquidation of goods and assets, as well as accounting books (daily and ledger), book of minutes and book of registry of members. , which were authorized by this authority for their protection”, indicates the resolution published in La Gaceta.

The resolution details that they have “hindered the control and surveillance” of that Migob entity by not reporting:

  • Financial statements according to fiscal periods with detailed breakdowns: income, expenses, trial balance, detail of donations (origin, provenance and final beneficiary)
  • Boards of directors of the country of origin
  • Identity and origin information of all its donor members: names, surnames, identification card or passport, exact address and telephone number.
  • Previous donations from abroad.

List of canceled foreign NGOs grows to 28

The Migob alleges that the organizations failed to comply with Law 1115 or the General Law for the Regulation and Control of Non-Profit Organisms, -which came into force on May 6- and Law 977 or the Law against Money Laundering, Financing of Terrorism and the Financing of the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction and its regulations, as well as Law 1040 or Law of Regulation of Foreign Agents by not registering.

With these cancellations of registrations, 28 foreign organizations have been eliminated, the cancellations of these foreign organizations have occurred between August 2021 and May 2022.

The Ortega regime has eliminated 199 NGOs so far this year and has eliminated a total of 273 civil society organizations from 2018 to date, including associations, foundations, institutes, centers and organizations.

Dozens of these developed education projects, medical programs, support for women victims of violence, environmental protection, promotion and defense of human rights, among others.
