Government bets on the reactivation of goat raising in 10 provinces

President Luis Abinader started a project in Azua focused on reactivating and invigorating the raising goats and sheep in 10 provinces, taking advantage of land that does not have a vacation for agriculture.

The plan for the relaunch, repopulation and development of the sheep-goat sector in the Dominican Republic finances 10,000 breeders with 350 million pesos, at a rate of 5% per year for four years, with a 12-month grace period and installments to be paid quarterly.

The program includes training and seminars that have already begun to be taught. It will be carried out with an initial duration of two years and will benefit some 1,000 producers, located in the 10 selected provinces: Azua, San Juan, Bahoruco, Elías Piña, Independencia, Pedernales, Valverde, Santiago Rodríguez, Monte Cristi and Dajabón.

They seek to mobilize some 25,454 specimens (20,000 females and 5,454 pimps), expecting 55,000 more quintals of national meat production annually.

Hecmilio Galván, executive director of the Special Fund for Agricultural Development (FEDA), explained that the main idea is for breeders to strengthen their infrastructure and also improve their genetics, for which a financing through the Agricultural bank minimum of RD$300,000.

With that money, the producers can acquire better quality animals as pimps, improve their infrastructure and have a small amount of working capital.

Abinader assured that raising these animals is highly profitable, with a local and tourist market that buys the meat, in addition to the possibility of export. The president hopes that this activity will be the door to lift thousands of Dominicans out of poverty.

The Minister of Agriculture, Limber Cruz; Erick Rivero, adviser to the Executive Power; Iván Hernández Guzmán, director of the National Institute for Price Stabilization (Inespre); the senator of the province, Lía Díaz, and the governor Gray Hernández.
