Government begins work to adapt the Nizao River

San José de Ocoa.- President Luis Abinader began work on the adaptation of the Nizao River in 3.5 kilometers of its course, in the Rancho Arriba municipality, a project that will be carried out by the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI).

The works include the construction and rehabilitation of gabion walls in discontinuous sections and expansion of mattresses or gabion support, in order to safeguard lives in the Los Quemados, Estrechura and El Cementerio sectors, which suffer from flooding due to the overflow of the tributary.

Olmedo Caba Romano, executive director of INDRHI, pointed out that the project also seeks to promote the development of the fundamental agricultural activities of the greenhouses in the demarcation.

Government begins adaptation work

“The Rancho Arriba works have a total investment of RD$133,565 thousand to solve the problem that had been affecting not only the residents, but also the productive areas of the greenhouses that saw the flooding of the Nizao River as a threat. ”, he indicated.

The works contemplate the intervention in several stages. The official explained that in the stage the towns of Los Quemados, La Sabana and Juan Braulio will be intervened with the rehabilitation of 4,106 cubic meters of gabions and a stone container or mat of 3,617 cubic meters to contain the ravages of Nizao.

In addition, protection will be carried out in gabions and the adaptation of the Yayán ravine in the communities of La Sabana, El Cementerio and Los Banilejos, since the flooding of the river represents a threat to the physical integrity of the nearby families and crops that constitute their financial support.

On his side, Juan Antonio Troncoso, a community leader from Rancho Arriba, representing the residents of the demarcation, expressed his gratitude to the authorities for the start of the works on the adaptation of the river, by virtue of the fact that said municipality is highly productive and the work will protect hundreds of families.

In the municipal district of El Pinar, in this province, INDRHI will build a catchment dam, two pumping stations with 5.1 kilometers of delivery pipe with the aim of feeding a 20 x 30 meter regulation lagoon and a height of 4.5 that will benefit 5,550 producers.

The power line for this project will be 4.5 kilometers long and have a 1.80 m high galvanized mesh perimeter fence.

Present at the start of the work were Deligne Ascención, Minister of Public Works and Communications, and Igor Rodríguez, Administrative and Financial Deputy Minister of the Administrative Ministry of the Presidency.
