The works will begin in April, the month in which the act of transfer and start of works at the Rivera airport will also take place.

The works will require an outlay of 8.5 million dollars, as reported by the Minister of National Defense, Javier García.

Tasks will be carried out on the runway with road markings, the platform, refueling, the air terminal, the perimeter fence, the accesses to route 22, lighting, fire department and hangars.

The airport terminal will be operational by the end of this year, but work will be done so that in 2023 the airport obtains authorization for international routes, for which immigration, customs and air police will be required.

García highlighted that the total investment for the repair and fine-tuning of the six terminals included in the permit will be 67 million dollars (in addition to Carmelo, it includes the Rivera, Salto, Cerro Largo, Paysandú and Durazno terminals). The National System of International Airports is also integrated by Carrasco and Laguna del Sauce.

For his part, the executive director of the Puerta del Sur company, Diego Arrosa, stated that it is an important investment, which will represent “a before and after in the Uruguayan aeronautical industry.”
