The President of the Republic Laurentino Cortizo Cohen announced the adoption of administrative measures to the Panama mining company, after failing to comply with the agreements agreed in January 2022. The measures are established in accordance with the laws of the Republic of Panama.
Cortizo addressed the nation through Cadena Nacional and said that in the extraordinary Cabinet Council, held this Thursday, December 15, it was approved to instruct the ministers of Commerce and Industry, Environment and Labor to adopt these measures in order to comply with the 2017 ruling of the Supreme Court of Justice that declared the contract between the State and Minera Panama unconstitutional.
The Council of Ministers approved closing the commercial operations of the Cobre Panama project, however the Ministry of Labor was instructed to guarantee the protection of the labor benefits of the mine workers and that the source of employment be maintained.
