The Undersecretary of Social Services, Francisca Perales, announced the various measures that have been activated to help homeless people within the framework of the Winter Plan.
In this sense, he presented a new strategy of residences for families, emphasizing that “it is necessary to review and redesign the intervention model that the State has for people in street situations.”
“The shelters must generate decent living conditions for people, for families, and also provide support to be able to get out of the street situation. The homeless situation can be overcome and, therefore, the idea of these shelters reception, in addition to providing shelter, is providing labor, legal, psychosocial, mental health support. That is what we are going to be strengthening”.
Regarding the measures to face the low temperatures of winter, today there are 378 devices operating throughout the country, with a presence in all regions within the framework of the Night with Dignity, Housing First, Protect and Code Blue plans.
In addition, to these, 254 new devices are added, which are in the process of being enabled, with which it is expected to reach 7,667 daily places in shelters throughout Chile and, close to 10,000 places if all the services are taken into account, such as centers diurnal, social routes, among others.
“We are interested in establishing a standard through joint work, but not only for the emergency and winter, but also in the projection of how State agencies and civil society have to collaborate to be able to work on this matter,” concluded the undersecretary.
