Given the unexpected figures that the National Institute of Statistics, INE, delivered this week on the Consumer Price Index (CPI), in which inflation had an increase of 1.2% in the month of January, experts have pointed out that it would be a good idea to advance the Monetary Policy Meeting of the Central Bank to discuss a possible rate hike. The meeting of the financial entity is scheduled for next March 29.
According to INE data, this month of January is the most expensive since 1992, when a CPI of 1.1% was reached.
The Minister(s) of the Treasury, Alejandro Weber, referred to the issue and pointed out that “the Central Bank is a constitutionally autonomous body, which means that they make their decision with total independence and based fundamentally on technical principles. Therefore, it is not up to the Executive to indicate whether or not the Monetary Policy meeting should be anticipated.”
However, the holder of the portfolio indicated that the autonomy of the Central Bank must be defended among all. “What I do want to emphasize and be very rigorous in this is that everyone in our country has to protect, defend and encourage the autonomy of the Central Bank. In matters as important as inflation, the role that the entity has is evident, ”he indicated.
