Government alert for “Raymond”; Floods affect Guerrero and Veracruz

According to the forecast, the passage of the tropical storm off the coast of Guerrero will favor the potential for torrential rains in several areas of the state, as well as strong gusts of wind and high waves along the entire coastal strip.

The Secretary of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection, Roberto Arroyo Matus, said that the mandate of Governor Evelyn Salgado Pineda is to take extreme preventive work, warning and monitoring.

Guerrero authorities shared recommendations for residents in the last few hours, including having water and food on hand to protect themselves.

Salgado showed on networks the clearing work in Ixtapa, to prevent flooding as in the municipalities already affected.

In Veracruz, the rains also left houses flooded, in addition to landslides and cut-off communities, where evacuation work has begun.

The municipalities of Álamo and Tantoyuca are the most affected by the floods, according to the state government.

“The rain was intense in the north of Veracruz. There are still flooded areas in Álamo and Tantoyuca mainly. We flew over Gutiérrez Zamora, Poza Rica and Coatzintla, where there is flooding on the river bank, the population is fine. It continues to rain in Huasteca,” said Governor Rocío Nahle.

Storm warning

The Government of Mexico alerted the general population this afternoon to maintain surveillance of dams and rivers in Baja California Sur, Colima, Guerrero, Jalisco, Michoacán, Oaxaca, Tamaulipas and Veracruz, due to the effects of the tropical storm ”Raymond”, which developed this morning in the south-southwest of Guerrero.

The General Coordinator of the National Meteorological Service (SMN), of Conagua, Fabián Vázquez Romaña, explained that, from today until next Saturday, ”Raymond”, in combination with the contribution of humidity from a low pressure area over the Gulf of Mexico, will cause rains with accumulated amounts of 250 to 350 millimeters (mm) in the north of Veracruz, Guerrero and the coast of Michoacán; from 150 to 250 mm in Colima, Oaxaca and Chiapas, as well as from 75 to 150 mm in the northwest, west, center and southeast of Mexico, the center of Tamaulipas, Campeche and Quintana Roo.

He explained that the rains recorded in recent hours and those expected in the coming days will exceed the October weather in various regions of the country. An example is that of last October 8, with accumulations of 320 mm in the southeast of Oaxaca; of 286 mm, in Cuetzalan, Puebla, and 280 mm, in the El Morralillo dam, in the north of Veracruz.

For today, torrential rains (greater than 250 mm) are expected in Guerrero, Michoacán, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Puebla and Tabasco; intense (75 to 150 mm) in Chiapas and areas of Tamaulipas, as well as strong (25 to 50 mm) to very strong (50 to 75 mm) in the Baja California Peninsula and the northwest, west and center of the country.

For tomorrow, very heavy to intense rains are estimated in Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, Hidalgo, Veracruz and Campeche, and heavy to very heavy in the Baja California Peninsula, Sonora, Sinaloa and the center of the country.

For Saturday, the forecast is for heavy to intense rains in the northwest of Mexico, Chiapas and Veracruz, as well as showers (5 to 25 mm) with heavy rains in the west, center, south and southeast of the country and the Yucatan Peninsula.

Regarding the tropical cyclone ”Raymond”, he explained that it is located approximately 125 kilometers (km) south-southwest of Técpan de Galeana and 190 km south-southeast of Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, with maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour (km/h), gusts of 95 km/h and movement towards the west-northwest at 22 km/h.
