The Government of Peru, through the ministries of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Culture and Transport and Communications, announced the measures implemented after the train collision recorded on December 30, 2025 on the Ollantaytambo–Machupicchu railway.
As part of the response, emergency protocols were activated and specialized teams were sent to the area to care for those affected.
For its part, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) launched the Tourist Protection Network and articulated actions with regional and local authorities in order to ensure immediate attention, protect the safety of visitors and facilitate the subsequent resumption of the tourist service to Machu Picchu.
Through the General Directorate of Inspections, the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) launched administrative procedures to clarify the causes of the accident and determine possible responsibilities. Likewise, it required the operating companies involved, PeruRail and Inca Rail, to deliver the technical and operational documentation, including insurance policies, in order to verify their coverage.
The Ministry of Health, in coordination with DIRESA Cusco and private establishments, deployed 12 ambulances along with specialized medical teams to immediately care for the injured, in coordination with local governments and emergency bodies present on the scene.
For its part, the Ministry of Culture reported that affected visitors may request rescheduling or a refund of the cost of their tickets to the Llaqta of Machupicchu. He specified that the procedure will be communicated in a timely manner and that the corresponding support will be provided.
