There are few 4T officials who privilege openness and dialogue, who have the preparation and experience for the position, and much fewer who dare to contradict the President and suggest changes of direction regarding his economic and social policy, that little by little sinks us deeper into poverty and underdevelopment. Tatiana Clouthier was one of those few lights in the middle of the deep hole into which this fourth class government has plunged us, and her departure leaves us with a tremendous bad taste in our mouths.
I had the pleasure of meeting Tatiana when we were both federal deputies in the last legislature, and although she was not an economist or had relevant experience in related issues, she always distinguished herself for being an applied legislator, a student of the issues we discussed, and in many times rebel to the vertical decisions that are given in the congress from the Palace. That was the difference of Tatiana, and the value of having her at the head of the economic sector, one of the hardest hit after a long pandemic, and as a result of bad decisions in energy and fiscal matters.
The great first task of Tatis was not minor, it was to resolve a panel of controversies with the most important country in the world, the United States, at its request for having consistently violated Mexico’s agreements on energy investment established in the TMEC , and pretend to monopolize CFE and PEMEX. The next challenge was to propose the necessary agreements between the business sector and the government to stop the runaway inflation in the country. In the first task she was not listened to and in the second, they did not even allow her to participate.
Now comes to Economy, Raquel Buenrostro, former head of the SAT, mathematician and economist, with 20 years of experience in the public sector. Her resume is interesting, and challenging, as she will go from being the persecutor of businessmen to a promoter of industrial policy. Among her many tasks, to make the president see the enormous risks of initiating multimillion-dollar lawsuits with the United States due to the head policy promoted by Rocío Nahle; Let’s hope she is heard.
But her true litmus test will be to have the same openness that Tatiana Clouthier had with the business sector, she will need to be willing to listen to some complaints against the President, and work alongside the business chambers. Her task will be to recover the lost confidence, which is necessary to trust again in the objective of that secretariat, to include and listen to all sectors to make the best decisions.
From this space my vote of confidence to Mrs. Raquel Buen Rostro, and as former president of the National College of Economists, my request also so that like every new secretary arrives, receive us and listen. Recently, we were summoned to the national economics congress, and once again a broad exercise was carried out to listen to economics professionals and the foundations were laid for the 2050 nation project that Mexico needs. What better sign of openness than listening to this interesting analysis, because society does not fit into a single party or ideology, society is all of us.
