First there was Chifagate and the clandestine meetings with Chinese businessmen. Then, the women who obtained contracts with the State after passing through the Government Palace. In both cases, the president José Jerí It had different versions.
We summoned the psychotherapist—and columnist of Peru21— Gonzalo Elías to sit the president on the couch and understand his behavior, at least questionable.
From psychology, what can we say about President Jerí and his versions?
First, I want to clarify that I do not know Mr. José Jerí… I think he has always shown himself to be a not very transparent person.
How do you notice it?
When a person has different versions, even contradictory ones… Because it is normal for one to have sides and facets, but it is another thing to lie. And something that does not fail is body language. More than 50% of human communication is non-verbal. When we see Mr. Jerí giving these explanations on television, it even embarrasses others. I felt like I was digging my own grave. He got nervous. It’s a shame because I only had to do things right for a few months. How difficult is it to do things well for a few months?
Now, there is also clumsiness, right?
The evil of our politicians can be summed up in this: clumsiness and dishonesty. We have intelligent but corrupt politicians. And sometimes unintelligent but honest politicians. And what we are seeing in recent years is: politicians who are neither intelligent nor honest.
Is there perhaps excessive vanity in Jerí?
I see narcissistic traits in President Jerí. Vanity, being pretentious, this issue of being a womanizer, there’s a reason they call him ‘Pajerí’. I see him as a crafty person.
In what sense is a crafty person?
In several ways. He is politically crafty. I know from good sources that he was a lobbyist before. The lobbyist is usually a crafty person.
But at the beginning of his administration he showed himself to be “good people” and that he was present, that he communicated.
It also has virtues. He was seen working. I went with the police. He rolled up his shirt. He is not stupid and he is not brilliant either. He could not last even three months at the height of the position. It doesn’t measure up. And well, the position has practically been found.
What about him betrays him?
His vanity, his narcissism. He is a womanizer. He hires women in the State (after suspicious night meetings), one who enters in the afternoon and leaves the Palace the next day. He hangs out in clubs in Lima with people who are also crafty. His lack of values and personality traits betray him.
However, from the beginning he had questions (one of them linked to a rape case) and almost went through lukewarm water.
Which also speaks of our machismo, of our even a little misogynistic side. That also speaks about us as a society. But it is also said: “well, now, we are not going to interfere with his personal life if he is an honest and executive president.” And in the end what I always think happens: how far can one separate the person from the professional?
So, now that the elections are coming, how do we choose taking into account these behavioral and emotional factors?
That’s super important. The vote is emotional. Let’s not fool ourselves. How many people read government plans? It must be 1%. My suggestion is let’s also analyze emotional intelligence.
What should we look at?
In non-verbal language. The background. What they do with their private lives, in the end, does matter to us. There are data from personal life that can make us, at least, doubt, evaluate and investigate. They are people who are going to make decisions that will affect all Peruvians.
Should we also evaluate if we are dealing with an impulsive candidate, with an excessive temperament?
Of course. Impulsiveness tells us a lot about a politician. Again, not even three months have passed and the president is already putting on a disguise to find himself in a chifa… That impulsiveness of using his position as president of the republic to probably do some kind of lobbying and then going out – also impulsively – to try to fix it…
Now we will have candidates from TikTok, who become strong from that platform, where a lot is appearance and brutality.
Regarding the term brutality, I do believe that we are a little stupid or stupid to be guided only by appearances.
For who shouts the most, who insults the most…
We have fallen into a very superficial culture, which is guided by TikTok, appearances, little videos, little dances; They are good, but we have to look for a little more content, substance, depth, intelligence…
We must go beyond the viral TikTok video.
The official will assume an important position that affects the real and daily lives of people.
In the name of spontaneity, of “being real”, we are seeing every atrocity…
That cannot happen in politics. We are talking about officials who are going to work with our money and who are going to make decisions that affect our lives, the lives of our children and the lives of our parents. It is our responsibility to put someone who is qualified. You just have to choose someone skilled and honest.
