González Urrutia’s lawyer: “Today the prosecutor showed that there are no guarantees”

Lawyer: Edmundo González has not requested asylum or to be a guest in any embassy

Edmundo González Urrutia’s lawyer, José Vicente Haro, reported on the afternoon of September 5 that “it is not planned” that the former candidate appear before the Prosecutor’s Office: “Any appearance will be to declare him guilty,” he warned.


José Vicente Haro, Edmundo González Urrutia’s lawyer, spoke out on the afternoon of Thursday, September 5, regarding the statements made by the prosecutor appointed by the 2017 constituent assembly, Tarek William Saab: “What he did was attribute more crimes to him and presume his guilt (…) There are no guarantees and the prosecutor has demonstrated this today with his statements,” he said.

At noon on September 5, the head of the Public Ministry offered a press conference in which he referred to the meeting held with José Vicente Harolawyer for the presidential candidate of the Unitary Platform, Edmundo González Urrutia. According to what was expressed by the official, the letter which the applicant gave him, through his lawyer, worsened his situation.

“I went to the Ministry in good faith Public, to explain the content of the letter (…) I went to the Public Ministry for the rights of Edmundo González Urrutia, for the rights of Mercedes de González and for the rights of Venezuelans (…) Today’s statements are not compatible with the guarantees that must exist for his appearance (…) What he (the prosecutor) did was attribute more crimes to him and presume his guilt,” Haro assured the press.

Meeting with Saab

On the afternoon of September 4, Haro met with the official of the Public Ministry and gave him a letter from González Urrutia, in which the former presidential candidate explains the reasons why he did not attend the three summons issued by the Prosecutor’s Office.

The lawyer said that Saab put in his mouth “words that I have not said,” he said, and reiterated that it is not “proposed” that González Urrutia appear before the Prosecutor’s Office. “Any appearance will be to declare him guilty,” he warned.

González Urrutia is the subject of an arrest warrant requested by the Prosecutor’s Office on September 2. The First Special Anti-Terrorist Court agreed to the arrest warrant of the former ambassador. The UN, the European Union and at least 10 Latin American countries They rejected the measure.

Machado began her letter by stating that “this Prosecutor’s Office is an arm of persecution and state terrorism in Venezuela; the appointment and performance of its spokesperson is not only illegitimate, it is a disgrace that history will judge,” she said.

Earlier, the founder of Vente Venezuela, María Corina Machado, also spoke out about Saab’s statements – whom she called “one of the main harassers and violators of human rights” – and indicated that she assumes the “responsibility for the minutes“electoral results published on the website resultadosconvzla.com “because they are legal, legitimate and express popular sovereignty,” he wrote.
