When he was exiled in Spain, Edmundo González Urrutia said he has dedicated this time to defend the “legitimate mandate” given by the Venezuelan people in the presidential elections of 2024 and prepare his return.
«Exile has not been a shelter; It has been the space from which actions, meetings and decisions that today mark the circumstance that the Venezuelan regime have been woven. What was then seen as a forced exit became a mission that has had visible consequences, ”González Urrutia wrote in an article published in the Spanish newspaper El Mundo.es.
González Urrutia said he does not defend a position, nor a name but the popular will that was expressed at the polls. According to the electoral records collected by table witnesses and sheltered in Panama, González Urrutia was the winner of the electoral contest with more than seven million votes.
«This journey is not about me, it is not about Edmundo: it is about each of those votes that represent a trust that cannot be betrayed and that is kept alive even in the distance. The minutes have not been protected only – which are protected in safe vaults in Panama–; The person who embodies the legitimacy of that choice has also been protected. And that protection, which began with a military plane from another country, has a deeply political and moral sense ».
In his reflection, González Urrutia highlighted teamwork with María Corina Machado, as well as the support of the unit platform and several political friends. He thanked the respectful treatment he has received in Spain since he arrived, as well as the freedom to act he has had.
«This year, in addition, it has given us more organization. Each action against popular will we have known how to counteract it, demonstrating that legitimacy is not yielded or abandoned. Far from weakening ourselves, we have deepened the trust within the team, assuming each one the role that corresponds to it. María Corina and I do good team. Together we have prepared for the transition because the responsibility of embodying a democratic mandate does not admit improvisations.
