Gold Fields, one of the most important mining companies worldwide, continues its commitment to Peru with new and ambitious Exploration projects.
In an exclusive interview with the Mining Dialogues program of the MINAS ENGINEERING INSTITUTE OF PERU (IIMP), Paul Gómez, vice president for the Americas of Gold FieldsHe said the company has been working on exploratory projects both Brownfield and Greenfield.
The Mining Company of South African origin, which has operated in Peru for 16 years, is determined to find a new deposit comparable to the successful Cerro Corona, one of its main mines, which will enter into the process of progressive pre-cierre.
“Why not seek a new Cerro Corona, not only to replace the production to be lost, but also will continue to generate value, local benefit and also benefit to the company. Our exploratory activities for this purpose are maintained and are also increasing compared to 2024, ”said Gomez.
In that sense, Paúl Gómez said that Gold Fields has a budget of approximately US $ 30 million for the next two years (2025-2026) only in explorations, with US $ 15 million for each year, which represents twice as much inverted the previous year. This investment will concentrate on Brownfields type explorations (near the current operational units) and Greenfields (new lands without exploring), with the aim of discovering gold deposits.
“We have three areas identified in the country. In the north we continue in Cajamarca, it is a prolificly impressive land from the geological point of view. And besides that it has allowed us, I repeat, operate more than 16 years in an uninterrupted way. We are in Áncash, where we have some projects and some projects. And we will be in the south, in Moquegua, ”he detailed in mining dialogues.
They will seek gold without ruling out other metals
Despite the possibility of finding other valuable metals, Gold Fields continues to maintain gold as its main objective, although they do not exclude the possibility of considering another mineral. “Cerro Corona is the only mine of every Gold Fields in the world that is copper-organ. Our strategic vision is to stay in gold, but if we have a site that has gold and have another byproduct, we will consider it, ”said Paul Gómez.
