The world prices of food decreased even more in December and even fell below their level a year ago, at the end of a 2022 marked by rising values, announced this Friday the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
The food value index of the FAOwhich follows the variation in international prices of a basket of basic products, fell by 1.9% compared to the month of November 2022.
It’s about your ninth consecutive fall after the record increase in March after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
This index stands on average at 132.4 points in December, “1% less than its value a year earlier. However, for 2022 as a whole (…) the index was established at 143.7 points; that is, 14.3% more than the average value of 2021” , indicated the FAO.
“Is well that the food prices calm down after two very volatile years,” said Máximo Torero, chief economist at the FAO.
It is essential to “stay vigilant and focus on mitigating the food insecurity world,” he added.

The price index of vegetable oils, which fell by 6.7%, drives this monthly decrease.
The oil prices of palm, soybean, rapeseed and sunflower fell in December, in their lowest level since February 2021.
The one of the cereals decreases 1.9% compared to the month of November, due to a greater availability of wheat after the harvests in the southern hemisphere and a drop in world corn prices.
