For more than 180 hours without feeding, the hunger strike of Federal Deputy Glauber Braga (PSOL/RJ) has mobilized government ministers, deputies, popular leaders, artists and intellectuals on the eight days when camped in the plenary of the House of Representatives. The protest began after the Ethics Council recommend the revocation of Braga’s mandate.
“Tonight I felt more emotional shaking. I slept little, about four hours. I woke up, thought a lot and I feel strong again. I will not give up,” said the deputy, in a statement, on Wednesday (16).
The parliamentarian is not talking to the press to save energy, has eaten only isotonic drinks and has gone out to bathe sunshine and to be analyzed by a doctor twice a day. The deputy lost more than four pounds in these eight days.
“Yesterday had front headache [dor de cabeça] Lead that gave in without analgesic use, a gastrointestinal malaise, without further consequences, and back pain, ”said doctor Antonio Alves.
Glauber responds for decorum breaking for assaulting an far right militant who offended his mother in the corridors of Parliament. Sick, the parliamentarian’s mother died less than a month after the incident.
Supporters consider the penalty disproportionate, remember that there are no precedents in the Chamber of Loss of Mandate for this type of conduct, and claim that decision is the result of political persecution for the complaint that makes the secret budget.
Council behavior
Deputy João Leão (PP -BA) – who voted for the cassation of Glauber in the Ethics Council – told the Brazil agency which previously defended a six -month suspension of the parliamentarian’s mandate, but that his behavior on the Ethics Council changed the scenario.
“He is being revoked by his behavior on the Ethics Council. He dug his own pit. He called the rapporteur [deputado Paulo Magalhães (PSD/BA)] and the former mayor [Arthur Lira (PP/AL)] of thieves. He is unable to continue because he does not respect the pairs, ”said the deputy, adding that he votes again for cassation if the case is to the House plenary.
The PSOL deputy accuses Lira and Marahães to articulate his cassation for the complaints he makes about the secret budget. Both deny and Lira promises to sue Glauber if he does not prove the accusations.
Strategy
PSOL has until next Tuesday (22) to resort to the Chamber’s Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ). The party discusses the best strategy for the appeal.
Representative Sâmia Bonfim (PSOL/SP), who is Glauber’s wife, said that, for now, there is no agreement with the leaders to reverse the cassation.
“We are evaluating the best strategy according to the answers we have from the leaders of Centrão and other parties. We can make a 900 -page piece that has all the legal and political elements to help us resort to the STF. Or we can do a lean piece depending on what can be built,” he said.
Sâmia says it will be necessary to face the “long holiday” until the next CCJ session and says the support they receive have given strength. “Solidarity, repercussion, visits. This has been important to take the emptying of the House Week because there was no face -to -face session,” he concluded.
Support
A vigil was set up on Tuesday (15) in front of the House to support Glauber and protest against the Amnesty PL. Retired Laura Lima, from the collective Rede Lular and Borda Fight, said the goal is to stay in place while the lawsuit lasts against the deputy.
“Glauber’s case affects democracy because of the persecution he has been suffering. This vigil is important to show our indignation and solidarity to Glauber and Sâmia, and everyone who faces the far right in Parliament,” he said.
The PSOL deputy has received unexpected visits and support, such as PL deputy Antonio Carlos Rodrigues (SP), Deputy Fausto Pinato (PP/SP) and Deputy Ribamar Antônio da Silva (PSD-SP).
Glauber also received solidarity from ministers, parliamentarians, leaders and popular movements, artists and militants. A petition with more than 154,000 signatures against its cassation circulates on the internet.
Seven Lula government ministers visited the parliamentarian, including the Minister of Institutional Relations, Gleisi Hoffman, and the Minister of the Secretariat of Social Communication (Secom), Sidônio Palmeira. On Tuesday, the Minister of Agrarian Development, Paulo Teixeira, and the indigenous peoples, Sônia Guajajara, were with Glauber in the plenary of the council.
On Monday (14), a samba was made in the premises of the Chamber in support of the parliamentarian. He also received support from artists such as singing and songwriter Chico Buarque.
In a letter, the Emmaus collective – which brings together religious leaders, such as Friar Betto and Leornado Boff – said Glauber is being persecuted for “facing his tormentors.”
“We want to express to you our support and tell you how important your person is at this time that Brazil lives and in this Congress with so many challenges,” wrote Christian leaders in a letter to Glauber Braga.
