Giorgia Meloni urges not to sit idly by in the face of the Venezuelan crisis at the UN

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her “solidarity and support” for the Venezuelan people, and said that within Latin America “as unfortunately occurs in several regions of the world, the legitimate aspirations for freedom and democracy of tens of millions of people remain unfulfilled.”

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni spoke on Tuesday, September 24, about the Venezuelan political crisis and urged the international community to “not sit idly by” in the face of the situation.

“The international community cannot stand by as, almost two months after the elections of 28 July, the electoral result has still not been recognised, but in the meantime there has been brutal repression, resulting in the death of dozens of protesters, the arrest of thousands of political opponents, and the indictment and exile of the democratic opposition presidential candidate. It is our duty to speak out,” Meloni said during his speech at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

He expressed his “solidarity and support” for the Venezuelan people, and said that within Latin America, “as unfortunately occurs in several regions of the world, the legitimate aspirations for freedom and democracy of tens of millions of people remain unfulfilled.”

Meloni centered his speech in the reforms that the UN must face in order to adapt to new times and war conflicts, especially over Palestine and Ukraine, of whom he said “we cannot turn our backs” on the defense of their borders and sovereignty.

He also pointed out that it is possible to “defeat the slavers of the Third Millennium” who lure and abandon migrants who are received on Italian shores. To do so, he said that greater cooperation and joint initiatives between police forces, intelligence services and judicial authorities are necessary, adopting the formula of “following the money.”

“This is a method with which Italy intends to strengthen its cooperation with Latin American nations,” said Meloni, who argued that human trafficking organisations in Africa have connections with drug trafficking in the region.
