Foreign Minister Yván Gil denounced within the framework of the UN Disarmament Conference that took place in Geneva in the context of the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland that Venezuela has faced aggression for more than 20 years from hegemonic powers.
“My country has been the object for more than two decades of a systematic and sustained strategy of multidimensional maximum pressure aggression designed and executed by hegemonic Western powers, aimed at undermining the stability of our constitutional order and violating the sovereign will of the Venezuelan people with the purpose of imposing a regime change based on geopolitical interests,” he expressed.
The chancellor noted that the imposition of sanctions against the country sought to affect citizens and the national economy. Likewise, he indicated that the aggression against the South American nation was articulated by various actors inside and outside the region, seeking to generate international instability.
The return of President Maduro is demanded
At the same time, the Bolivarian delegation denounced before the multilateral forum the multidimensional aggression of maximum pressure perpetrated by the United States, which escalated on January 3, 2026 with bombings against Venezuelan territory.
This military attack, which left more than 100 dead and affected civil infrastructure such as the Venezuelan Institute of Scientific Research (IVIC), culminated in the kidnapping of constitutional president Nicolás Maduro Moros and the deputy, first combatant Cilia Flores.
The chancellor reiterated the country’s demand for the immediate and safe return of President Nicolás Maduro and the first lady, Cilia Flores.
Elimination of nuclear weapons
During his speech at the United Nations Disarmament Conference in Geneva, the Foreign Minister of Venezuela, Yván Gil, also demanded, on behalf of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, the total elimination of nuclear weapons and the destruction of their arsenals.
Likewise, Gil urged the “Member States to reaffirm their relevant commitment to the application of the disarmament and non-proliferation architecture.” In his opinion, the existence of these arsenals represents the denial of life and is incompatible with the principles of humanity.
The chancellor made a categorical call to member states to demonstrate renewed political will to comply with existing non-proliferation treaties.
The representative of Bolivarian diplomacy denounced that the sophisticated forms of contemporary colonialism accelerated an arms race that places the world before a probable scenario of nuclear catastrophe where there would be no winners. Venezuela emphasized the urgency of replacing threats with a collective security system based on cooperation and strict respect for international law.
In his opinion, lasting peace is only possible if the sustained increase in global military spending is stopped, which diverts critical resources that should be allocated to sustainable development and the well-being of the people.
He highlighted that the Venezuelan Government reaffirmed the importance of the Conference on Disarmament as the only legitimate multilateral forum to negotiate arms control and guarantee the preservation of life on the planet.
