This Thursday, June 9, the country celebrates the Geologist’s Day. The initiative originated thanks to the Board of Directors of the Argentine Geological Association, which decided to commemorate the Argentine Center of Geologists, the first space that brought together professionals in the field.
The Argentine Center of Geologists was an important pillar for these professionals, since it defended the exercise of their work and ensured the prestige of their work. In this sense, an Extraordinary Assembly was held on June 9, 1948 where it was instituted the date As the Geologist’s Day.
Behind the foundations of the entities that watch over the geologistsProfessionals Agustín Monteverde, Raúl Muller and Juan Candiani formed an elemental part. The aforementioned geologists were the pioneers in holding different meetings to bring together all their colleagues, in search of an association to represent them.
On this date, the work of the geologists, who perform elementary functions for the planet. These professionals in the field carry out different investigations where they determine the conditions of the soil, the impact of the phenomena on them and, in addition, they study ancient periods.
For its part, through its website, the Argentine Geological Association details its interests: “Our main objective is to be able to inherit to the next generations an even more prestigious, open, democratic, federal entity and a benchmark for the community.”
The emergence of geology in the country
One of the main people responsible for promoting and promoting geology was Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, who, after assuming the presidency in 1868, founded the first Mining School in San Juan. In addition to this, the politician advocated the arrival of geologists and engineers from abroad.
As if this were not enough, Sarmiento also had a fundamental role in the creation of the Faculty of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences of Córdoba, which launched neither more nor less than the first Geological Map of the country.
