Generation deficit will leave more than 40% of Cuba without electricity this Sunday

Outside thermoelectric generation units and lack of fuel cause the high prognosis of this August 10.

Arequipa, Peru – The Electric Union (UNE) of Cuba confirmed that the electric service was interrupted throughout this August 9 and that this Sunday there would also be generalized effects in more than 40% of the island.

The situation of the National Electrical System (SEN) continues serious. For this August 10, a good part of the island will be in a blackout due to a deficit of 1,390 megawatts (MW).

Currently several units of Thermoelectric generation They are out of service due to breakdowns or maintenance such as unit 2 of CTE Felton. They are also not working due to lack of fuel 61 distributed generation plants with 446 MW.

“The UNE estimates for the night peak schedule an availability of 2,130 MW and a maximum demand of 3,450 MW, for a deficit of 1,320 MW, so, if the planned conditions are maintained, an affectation of 1,390 MW is forecast at this time,” says the part of the State company for this Sunday.

In areas of the interior of the country, the cuts can exceed 20 hours a day, forcing many families to cook with firewood, improvise cooling systems, and completely reorganize their routines.

Older people, young children and patients with chronic diseases, are the most vulnerable sectors in this situation; which in turn aggravates food insecurity and limits access to drinking water and basic health services.

The energy crisis that Cuba lives is not new, but has climbed more intensity since 2021, when the mass blackouts began after the collapse of several generating units. To this are added the chronic lack of currency, inefficiency in state management, imported fuel dependence and the technical deterioration of an obsolete system.

So far from 2025, at least four national blackouts have been recorded that have left Cuba completely in the dark for several hours. Meanwhile, the regime maintains censorship about official protests and misinformation, without allowing free access to technical data or independent means.

On June 28, more than half of Cuba was in a blackout due to a 1907 megawatts deficit (MW), the greatest affectation that has been recorded in the midst of the energy crisis (not including simultaneous collapses throughout the island).
