Initially, prosecutor Chong, in charge of emblematic cases of the social outbreak, had summoned General Yáñez in September of last year, but the uniformed officer requested to postpone his statement until November 2022, when he again asked to postpone his testimony.

It should be noted that this is not the first time that the director general will testify as a defendant in a case linked to the social revolt of 2019, because he testified in one of the cases for possible crimes against humanity committed on that occasion.

Now, Yáñez will declare for a cause that investigates the crime of omission in illegitimate pressures. The investigation, today in the hands of the head of the High Complexity Unit of the Central North Metropolitan Prosecutor’s Office, prosecutor Ximena Chong, began in 2019 in Valparaíso and focused on the current head of the Carabineros for his role as director of Order and Security at the time the country’s mobilizations broke out.

The procedure is part of the investigation for crimes against humanity, although it is linked to a case initiated in 2021 that seeks to establish command responsibilities for crimes of omission in illegitimate pressures that occurred during the social uprising, between October 18, 2019 and March 30, 2021.
